What Is Cleanroom Apparel
Cleanroom apparel, simply put, is anything that you would wear into a cleanroom or sterile environment. Cleanroom clothing is meant to be lint-free and non-shedding, safe to wear into environments in which even the smallest particles could cause damage to the products that are being manufactured and packaged. By wearing the proper garments and accessories that are approved for cleanrooms, you can control contamination and protect yourself.
Cleanroom Apparel Requirements And Standards
Different classes of cleanrooms, labs, and sterile environments have different garment requirements, including ISO classifications (see below).
The strictest cleanrooms and labs will often require that anyone entering the cleanroom “gown up” and wear: cleanroom suits, bouffant hats, hoods, shoe or boot covers, goggles, face masks, and gloves.
Typically, you’ll be required to change into new protective clothing each time you enter the cleanroom.
Types Of Cleanroom Apparel
Just about anything that you’d wear into a cleanroom or lab qualifies as cleanroom apparel, but the primary types of clothing and accessories are:•cleanroom suits (also often referred to as “bunny suits”)•cleanroom gowns•cleanroom coveralls•cleanroom frocks•cleanroom coats•cleanroom aprons•cleanroom shirts•cleanroom pants•cleanroom shoes•cleanroom shoe and boot covers•cleanroom sleeves•cleanroom hoods
Materials For Cleanroom Apparel
The most common types of material for cleanroom material are listed below.
Sterile Material: Cleanroom apparel that’s considered “sterile” has had all of the loose particles removed from it before it was packaged. Our most common types of sterile garments are made out of Tyvek (a Dupont product) that provides an inherent barrier to particles, microorganisms, and non-hazardous, light liquid splash.
ESD Material: ESD (electrostatic discharge) events can negatively impact production of many products. Cleanroom apparel that’s made from ESD material offers protection from the electrostatic fields that can be generated from the clothing you’re wearing.
SMS Material: SMS is an abbreviation for “spun bond/melt blown/spun bond.” Cleanroom apparel that’s made out of SMS material has high levels of breathability and is fluid-repellent.
Microporous Material: Cleanroom apparel that’s made out of microporous material has a low particle count and a 99.9% filtration efficiency. Lightweight and durable, microporous material protects against particles, biologicals, and many fluids.
Chemical-Resistant Material: Cleanroom apparel that’s made out of chemical-resistant material offers protection from dry particulates and light liquid splashes.
Flash-Resistant Material and Flame-Resistant Material: Cleanroom apparel that’s flash-resistant and flame-resistant is made from a protective fabric that complies with cleanroom non-linting requirements, as well as OSHA safety requirements. These types of cleanroom garments have a low level flammability, which shields against high temperatures.
Biohazard-Resistant Material: Cleanroom apparel that’s made out of biohazard-resistant material uses a microporous film technology that protects against hazardous particles and light liquid splashes.
Disposable Cleanroom Apparel vs Washable Cleanroom Apparel
The decision about whether to use disposable or washable cleanroom apparel often comes down to a variety of considerations, including convenience, the type of clothing, and how comfortable the clothing is.
In addition, cost weighs into the choice. When deciding between disposable and washable, you need to compare not only the cost of the cleanroom apparel, but also the cost to wash it and sterilization requirements (if the garments are washable) versus the cost and procedures for disposal (if the garments are disposable).
ISO Classifications For Cleanroom Apparel
When you’re working in a cleanroom environment, you need to wear apparel that conforms to the ISO classification of the cleanroom. Wearing the wrong type of apparel could compromise the integrity of the cleanroom.
ISO classifications for apparel are determined by the amount and size of particulates per cubic foot of air.
We have cleanroom apparel, clothing, and garments that meet the following types of ISO Classifications:•ISO Class 5 (100 particulates per cubic foot)•ISO Class 6 (1,000 particulates per cubic foot)•ISO Class 7 (10,000 particulates per cubic foot)•ISO Class 8 (100,000 particulates per cubic foot)
How To Choose Cleanroom Apparel
When choosing cleanroom apparel, you’ll want to consider not only ISO classifications, but also the following:•type of fabric or material (sterile, ESD properties, flash-resistant, flame-resistant, biohazard-resistant, etc.)•hazardous risk protection•size•color•disposable or washable•individually packaged or bulk packaged (10 per pack, 100 per pack, etc.)
