What Is An N95 Mask

An N95 mask is a face mask that’s made up of multiple layers of protective fabric (polypropylene) and also includes a respirator. This type of personal protective equipment (PPE) protects you from airborne particles and liquid. The respirator in the N95 mask traps particles, so that you don’t breath them in. N95 face masks are meant to be disposable, because as more particles are trapped in the respirator, it becomes more difficult to breath through the masks.

The “N” in N95 masks refers to that fact that the masks are “not resistant to oil.” The “95” designation in N95 masks indicates that the respirators in the masks are blocking at least 95% of tiny particles. This percentage is also referred to as the “bacterial filtration efficiency.

How To Wear An N95 Mask

For maximum effectiveness, it’s important that you wear an N95 mask properly. Below are step-by-step instructions for how to put on AlphaProTech’s N95 mask.

Step 1: Fully Open The N95 Mask Before You Put It On
Take the N95 face mask out of its package, and hold onto the mask at the top of the mask (which is where the nosepiece for the face mask is located). At the bottom of the N95 mask, slide your finger behind the chin piece. Then open the mask by pulling down and out on the chin piece. Be sure to fully open the mask.

Step 2: Put On The N95 Mask With The Straps Behind Your Head And Adjust The Nose Piece
Next, you’ll put your chin into the pocket that you just created in the N95 mask. There are two bands on the N95 face mask, both of which will go over the back of your head. Pull the bottom strap on the N95 mask to behind your neck (below your ears), and position the other face mask strap near the crown of your head. The “magic arch” on the N95 mask is designed to conform to your nose and face, and it provides you with a larger breathing area, without restricting your vision. Mold the nose piece on the N95 mask so that it fits your nose and the contours of your face.

Step 3: Make Sure The N95 Mask Is Snug Against Your Face
To ensure that you’re properly protected, you’ll need to create a snug fit with the N95 mask,. To do this, hold the N95 mask by the nose piece, and gently pull down the chin piece (which is malleable) so that the N95 mask snugly fits your face. Once you have the N95 mask on, if there’s excess material under your chin, you can pinch it together and fold it over or twist it.

Step 4: Check That The N95 Mask Fits Properly
To check to see if the N95 mask is fitting properly, place your hands along the edges of the respirator and exhale. If you can feel air escaping around your nose, adjust the nose piece on the N95 mask. If you can feel air leaking from the edges of the N95 mask, unfold or untwist the chin piece and repeat step 3. Note that the photo above, on the right, shows what the N95 mask looks like when it's fitted correctly.
