FAQs About Autoclavable Shoes For Cleanrooms
Available in a large variety of features and colors, autoclavable shoes and clogs are specialized footwear that are designed to stand up to the rigors of autoclaving – a high temperature, high pressure sterilization process.

Below are frequently asked questions about autoclavable shoes for cleanrooms.

What Are Autoclavable Shoes
Autoclavable shoes are a specialized type of shoe or clog that’s designed to withstand the high-temperature sterilization process of an autoclave.

What’s An Autoclave
An autoclave is a device used to sterilize equipment, materials, and instruments using high-pressure, saturated steam. Autoclaves are commonly used in cleanrooms, labs, medical settings, and other controlled environments to eliminate bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores that could cause contamination.

Why Are Autoclavable Shoes Used In Cleanrooms
Autoclavable shoes and clogs are often used in cleanrooms to help maintain sterile conditions and reduce the risk of contamination.

Can All Cleanroom Shoes Be Autoclaved
Not all cleanroom shoes are autoclavable. Only autoclavable shoes and clogs can withstand the high temperatures of an autoclave, without being damaged.

What Materials Are Autoclavable Shoes Made From
Autoclavable shoes and clogs are made from durable materials (such as polypropylene, silicone, and thermoplastic elastomers) that are able to withstand the high heat and pressure of an autoclave.

Are Autoclavable Shoes Comfortable
Many autoclavable shoes are designed with ergonomic features (such as cushioned insoles and arch supports), which makes them comfortable to wear for extended periods of time.

Are Autoclavable Shoes Anti-Static
Some autoclavable shoes are also designed to be anti-static or ESD (electrostatic discharge) safe, which helps protect sensitive equipment in cleanrooms.

What Are Features Of Autoclavable Shoes
Some of the features that are available on autoclavable shoes include: ventilation, non-slip, steel-toes, heel straps, and ESD.

How Often Should Cleanroom Shoes Be Autoclaved
Cleanroom protocols vary, but in general, shoes or clogs are autoclaved after each use, in order to help maintain a sterile environment.

How Should Autoclavable Shoes Be Cleaned Before Autoclaving
Before autoclaving shoes, you should wipe them down with an appropriate disinfectant to remove any surface contaminants.

How Long Does It Take To Autoclave Shoes
The amount of time that it takes to autoclave shoes and clogs depends on the cleanroom’s protocols and the type of autoclave, but typically the process takes 15-60 minutes.

Can Autoclavable Shoes Be Used With Shoe Covers
Shoe covers can be worn on autoclavable shoes and clogs, and they’re often required in cleanrooms that have highly sensitive areas.

Can Autoclavable Shoes Be Worn Outside The Cleanroom
Technically, you can wear autoclavable shoes outside the cleanroom, but it’s not recommended, because you could compromise the sterility of the shoes.

Can Autoclavable Shoes Be Repaired
Once autoclavable shoes or clogs become damaged or show signs of wear, they should be replaced, not repaired.
